Music scores are arguably one of the most important, but most overlooked components of a video game. Often overshadowed by sharp visuals and complex gameplay mechanics, we find ourselves totally immersed.

I think it’s safe to say that for the most part I’m among fellow geeks here. There was a time when the world saw the word “geek” as a simple one-size-fits-all label to describe weird introverted people with any interest in video games, technology, and fantasy, but today it can mean many things. Much like the Japanese term "Otaku" it can be applied to different facets of passion. You can be a book geek, a game geek, even a knitting geek!

Having said all that, I'm unashamedly your stereotypical geek and like many old-school geeks I love me some sci-fi! As a kid I watched an unhealthy amount of Star Trek growing up which is why I was excited to hear that JJ Abrams (the director behind the incredible 2009 Star Trek reboot) has been signed-on to direct the now Disney-owned Star Wars VII....

2012 was definitely a good year for Hitman fans.

Hitman: Absolution raised the series to a whole new level and offered features never seen before in the Hitman universe, such as Contracts. Hitman: Absolution was built from the ground up with the fans in mind but also opened the doors to those that had never entered Agent 47's dark world of assassination - but we haven't forgotten our roots, which is why the Hitman HD Trilogy is a celebration of the series.

Included in this new pack is Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Hitman: Contracts and Hitman: Blood Money, all painstakingly rebuilt with enhanced assets and glorious new HD textures.

Gone are the days of grainy 4:3 CRT TVs; instead you can play it in eye-watering 720p at a silky-smooth 30fps. But it wouldn't be a true HD remake without those...

So far, since we launched Gameglobe last year, we've seen a range of great games created within the brower-based platform – lots of creativity and ideas flowing out from the awesome community, and it's been really exciting to watch.

But we've just added a whole new dimension – vehicles. This means that you can now build races into your levels… and we all love races!

Right now there are two vehicles you can use:

  • Off-Roader (below): Blast through all kinds of terrain with this fast four-wheeler!

  • Heavy Truck: The wise choice when you want almost impenetrable steel-plated armour. It might not be fast, but it sure is heavy!

Meanwhile, here's a bit of insight into the options you'll be able to tap into as a game developer...

One of this year's big releases for Square Enix is, of course, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII – and last week was the first opportunity of 2013 for a select few press to get see some early code.

The event took place in the beautiful city of Paris, and as well as a great insight into how the game's development is coming along, none other than the game's producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama were on hand to answer a few questions.

Needless to say, we tagged along… here you'll find our impressions of the day – and look out in the next few days for an interview with the main men themselves.

The demonstration took place at a trendy screening room in the centre of the city, and when everybody had arrived we were ushered into the presentation area. Sinking into our cosy armchairs, we looked on...

The Consumer  Electronics Show (or CES for short) is one of world’s largest trade shows. It celebrates the latest and greatest technology advancements in electronics industry. It’s an opportunity for companies all around the world - including the usual big names - to showcase their new products, talk about their visions for the future, and to generally toot their own horns.

Unsurprisingly it’s not unusual to see some of the major players in the games industry take centre stage - companies like NVIDIA, Sony, Microsoft to name a few. This year isn’t any different, and while there's still no news on any next generation console, this hasn’t stopped other companies attempting to steal some limelight and reveal what they believe to be the next big thing in gaming....
